⭐️ Long post/reflection alert: Evolving leadership at Marks and Spencer ⭐️
Around a year ago, I applied to join the M&S Evolve programme - a programme promising to turn our leadership from good to game changing. Maybe I was a little skeptical starting out, thinking what does that really mean? Asking myself: why is there so much hype for the programme internally and on LinkedIn?
I’m now sat on the train home after our final session and reflecting on my learnings throughout the programme. Things that might have seemed impossible at the start, became possible. Although at the start, we didn’t really know where the journey would take us…
If I had to narrow it down, my biggest win has been the focus on my inner game and being more present; how I can build my self-belief and channel this to be more confident, more motivated, happier even.
I’ve learnt to trust my intuition, reduce my overthinking and challenge myself - the biggest blocker to my success - on why not me? Why shouldn’t I:
👏🏻 Live my dream and apply for Cooking with the M&S Stars, learning from my wonderful chef mentor Shelina Permalloo. The realisation of how living amazing experiences can change you as a leader was phenomenal. Winning helped too! (Photo attached as LinkedIn is the one and only social platform yet to see it!)
👏🏻 Apply to be a school governor and be voted in by other parents - with lots of support and campaigning from my amazing wife Amy. This has given me confidence to broaden my network, share my knowledge externally and bring back new perspectives from working with external leaders.
👏🏻 Apply for a higher apprenticeship and MSc in Human Resource Management - which coincidentally I found out today has been successful and I’ll start the course in November! This one shows how the journey continues, the learning never ends and meets my mission from Elizabeth Lovius which was to ‘follow the flow of life.’
Anna Vila Pouca (CPsychol) promised us the best in the business facilitators and absolutely nailed it with a perfect balance of internal and external support. Elizabeth Lovius, Caroline Goyder, Vicky Gerrish and the team at Ivy House London, Rob Barnes, Pav Anand, Adam Dobbs and not forgetting our programme sponsor Nick Folland. Your support, honesty and challenge have been brilliant - thank you 👏🏻
It’s been a development journey like no other, shared with some brilliant colleagues who trusted each other to really open up and unlock insights for each other. There are far too many learnings to list here, but ultimately I am a far better version of myself than when I started.
There’s been lots of learning, laughter and real tears along the way - all absolutely worth it and an experience I’ll never forget. Apparently LinkedIn has a word limit I was never aware of before, so final thanks to Anna Vila Pouca (CPsychol), Lucie Blackburn and Chloe Sanghera (MCIPD) for putting this amazing programme together.
