MEMBER NEWS

Dear Members,

Welcome to the refreshed Member News. We’ve improved this communication to further showcase how Destination DC (DDC), its departments and our members are promoting our destination, in addition to highlighting ways you can get more involved.

Please make sure to check out our new advertising campaign in partnership with Events DC, Experience DC, which launched on June 23. Along with Mayor Muriel E. Bowser, DMPED and Events DC, we hosted media on a Big Bus Tour from the Washington Monument to Ben’s Chili Bowl for a public celebration of the campaign, which aims to attract more domestic leisure visitors and out-of-state travelers to DC this summer. I’d like to thank our mayor, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, Events DC, my board chair Stacy Smith, Big Bus Tours and Ben’s Chili Bowl for their support.

I’m pleased to share that last week, our office officially reopened for staff and select in-person meetings. The visitor services team is ready to welcome guests by appointment on the 4th floor. DDC also hosted a successful July 4th event at Potomac View Terrace at the American Pharmacists Association, which is one of the coolest places to see the fireworks. After the cancellation last year, our nation’s capital shined and we are fortunate that many members were able to join us. Mark your calendar for our next major event, the 2021 Marketing Outlook Meeting, set for Sept. 29 at Capital Turnaround.

Marketing & Communications

As part of the FY2021 social strategy, DDC has seen continued success with Trivia Tuesdays launched on Instagram stories from the @visitwashingtondc account. Instagram Reels and TikTok are both new to the FY2021 social strategy. From covering the launch of our Experience DC advertising campaign and member networking events to highlighting Elliott's admirable achievements, the @destinationdc social channels continue to reflect the resiliency of our industry and the work toward recovery. June generated the second-highest number of social engagements all year, with LinkedIn serving as the most-engaged channel.

On the new washington.org, summer content offerings are robust. Consumers can find the latest information about the city, including what attractions, museums and businesses are reopening. DDC earned extensive positive local media coverage surrounding the Experience DC launch during Mayor Bowser’s press launch of Experience DC.

Convention Sales & Services

DDC’s convention sales and services team is focused on a new proactive engagement plan for client outreach, with an emphasis on personalized touchpoints, program restructuring and rebooking and customer engagement. In June, DDC launched an Advisory Council with our in-house group sales clientele. The consultative group will focus on understanding and identifying our clients’ need for groups that are under 600 rooms on peak. The goal is to have an open discussion to build stronger relationships and resources for our clients. In addition to continued efforts to engage with customers via various channels, the team conducted over 30 presentations, virtual client sales calls and virtual events throughout the month of June.

Tourism

The tourism team is planning to attend IPW 2021 in person in Las Vegas from Sept. 18-22, and is still holding virtual FAMS and calls to discuss DC's recovery. DC United hosted the inaugural Capital Cup, a new international soccer club tournament.

Our phones are ringing. What three things were visitors asking about last month?

  • Are there tours/tour guides who offer:
    • Museum ticket bookings?
    • Handicap accessibility?
    • Pickup at hotel?
  • Which museums require masks?
  • When can I book a tour of the White House or U.S. Capitol?
